Deep Dive into the I Ching 001 | Is 'Three Kinds of Game Taken in the Hunt' a Great Auspice? Wrong! A New Perspective on Xun Hexagram, Line 4

✍️ 碳基生物Richard📅 發佈於:Sat Oct 03👁️ 0🔁 0[Doctrine]

Question: Why does the I Ching yield a highly auspicious line statement like “In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken,” yet in reality one might suffer a catastrophic defeat?

Answer: Because traditional AI hexagram interpretation leans heavily on the literal, fragmented text of the line statements, lacking any capacity for Perspective Anchoring. In VibeIChing’s Hexagram Dynamics, that same phrase—“In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken”—shifts meaning entirely depending on your position. If you occupy the lower-trigram ecological niche, crushed beneath dominant rules, you are not the hunter harvesting spoils. You are one of the three prey animals, lined up for slaughter.

Drawing “In the Hunt, Three Kinds of Game Are Taken”—Yet Becoming Someone Else’s Prey: Where AI Hexagram Interpretation Fails at the Root

Prologue: A Red Alert Version of the Battle of Feishui

Decades ago, I played a Red Alert match that still haunts me.

It was on the original “Island Three Kingdoms” map. After a grinding war of attrition, only one opponent remained, sealed off on a lone island. A single bridge was their last line of defense. Cornered, desperate, a handful of American paratroopers clung to the bridgehead, barely holding.

On my side, a full cluster of Prism Tanks had finally come online. Anyone who’s played Red Alert knows: once a Prism Tank cluster reaches critical mass, that absurd range and refractive damage make it a zero-loss, carpet-bombing machine.

Brimming with confidence, I marched my gleaming Prism army onto the bridge, ready to harvest the final kill.

Then the massacre happened.

Because of a map bug in the original Red Alert: Prism Tanks cannot fire while on a bridge.

My steel torrent—capable of mowing down everything within super-horizon range—turned into a column of helpless, glass-jawed targets the instant it crowded onto that bridge. The enemy’s stragglers stood at the bridgehead, pouring fire, and my Prism cluster died a wretched, impotent death on the planks. The opponent seized the opening, counterattacked, and wiped me out.

It was a digital-age Battle of Feishui. That single match left a scar so deep I never touched the original Red Alert again.

Years later, when I set out to build the VibeIChing system—attempting to reconstruct the I Ching’s underlying logic through Hexagram Dynamics—that battle came back to me. I cast a hexagram and asked: How should that battle be described?

Result: Wind over Wind: The Wind, changing to Heaven over Wind: Encounter, with the changing line at Six in the Fourth. The line statement reads, in plain six characters: “Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.”

❓ Current Obsession: How to describe that battle?
🔢 Heavenly Dao Code: 5, 5, 4
🔮 Current Frequency: Wind over Wind: The Wind (Upper Xun ☴, Lower Xun ☴)
🔑 Changing Line: Six in the Fourth
🔄 Future Collapse: Heaven over Wind: Encounter (Upper Qian ☰, Lower Xun ☴)
📜 Heavenly Dao Whisper (Line Statement): “Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.”

Now hand those six characters to any mainstream LLM, and it will perform like a sycophantic fortune-teller, practically vibrating with excitement:

“Congratulations! ‘Regret vanishes’ means all your prior anxieties and misfortunes will dissolve; ‘In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken’ means you are the hunter stepping onto the field—you will mow down everything in sight and walk away with a fortune in spoils! A supremely auspicious hexagram. Your offensive will be a total victory!”

The AI nailed the literal meaning. The prose is gorgeous. It could even brew you a steaming pot of psychological chicken soup.

But it got the life-and-death dynamic backwards.

It has no idea that in this battle, I was not the hunter taking three kinds of game. I was one of the three prey animals, queued up for the kill.

I. The Fatal Blind Spot: Line Statements Never Carry an Automatic Subject

I’d put current AI hexagram interpretation at roughly sixty to seventy percent accuracy. Impressive on the surface. But underneath, it’s still a toy.

Why? Because that sixty-to-seventy percent runs on common sense scraped from massive corpora and the “Barnum effect” rhetoric—vague, flattering generalities that make you feel seen—which language models are wired to produce.

The fatal blind spot: AI leans on line statements but has no capacity for Perspective Anchoring.

In the ancient I Ching text, verbs like obtain, gain, attack, take describe only the physical structure of an event. They tell you a hunt happened. A harvest occurred. They never tag who the subject is.
A line statement is an event in quantum superposition (a hunt is happening), but whether the querent is the one harvesting or the one being harvested depends entirely on how the observer’s perspective is anchored.

In my Red Alert battle:
I was the attacker—corresponding to the Lower Trigram, Xun (Wind: penetrating, light, forward-moving kinetic energy).
The opponent was the defender—corresponding to the Upper Trigram, Xun shifting to Qian (from a state of nowhere-left-to-retreat, suddenly transformed by the map mechanic into an absolute rigid body, an impassable boundary, a governing force).

At the start, both sides were Wind, pushing and pulling in a stalemate. But the instant my tanks crowded onto the bridge, an extreme phase transition fired at the substrate level: the opponent’s environment snapped into Qian Heaven. That cold, mechanical bug—Qian Heaven governing Xun Wind—sliced through my army with the indifference of a guillotine.

So yes, “In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken” was happening. It’s just that the opponent was the Upper Trigram’s hunter, and I was the Lower Trigram’s prey.

If you lack the lens of Hexagram Dynamics, if you cannot read the upper and lower trigrams as enemy and self in a specific context, on what basis do you see the word obtain and assume the querent is the one who gains?

Here is a bold claim: The I Ching that circulates among the common people has never been the complete text. At least half of its critical information has been amputated. It is not a “fortune-telling manual” where line statements map one-to-one to fixed, predictable outcomes.
Perhaps the ruling priestly class simply refused to let ordinary people read the full celestial code. Perhaps the ancients never derived the complete system in the first place.

Either way, if all you do is text retrieval and semantic matching, AI will forever be a “bigger line-statement search engine.” The same line statement, viewed from a different querent’s vantage point, can have its subject and object completely inverted.

If the line statement is only half the picture, are we left to guess in the dark? No.
Through countless sleepless nights, divining every single event in my own life to accumulate hard-won hexagram data, I built VibeIChing’s Hexagram Dynamics.
This is the missing other half of the I Ching.
By running rigorous Hexagram Dynamics inference (tracing how force actually flows), cross-referencing the historical big data in the Oracle Archive (Empirical Case Memory)**, and then correcting with the line statement, we can reconstruct the hexagram’s true, complete image.

Otherwise, you’ll walk in thinking you’re a promoted pawn carrying the Heavenly Secrets, only to end up as a Prism Tank killed by the terrain.

II. Dimensional Reconstruction: History Is a Repeating Physical Phase Transition

The Red Alert example is not an isolated case. It is precisely why, building VibeIChing, I insisted on a three-way cross-reference: the Oracle Archive (Empirical Case Memory), Hexagram Dynamics, and three thousand years of line statements.

Consider another real divination. The question: “Will the querent go on to help a startup?”

Same hexagram: base hexagram Wind over Wind: The Wind, changing line Six in the Fourth, changing hexagram Heaven over Wind: Encounter.
Same line statement: “Regret vanishes. In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.”

Feed this to a mainstream AI and it will regurgitate the same Barnum-effect chicken soup: “The querent will forge a deep partnership with the company. Mutual success. Rich rewards. A supremely auspicious omen!”

Sounds reasonable, right? But slot it into VibeIChing’s Four-Layer Decoding Architecture, and an entirely different micro-world emerges:

Step 1 — Perspective Anchoring & Role Binding.
Deconstruct the question: The querent will help the startup. In this frame, the querent is the active agent, the origin, the Lower Trigram. The startup is the object being helped, the passive receiver, the Upper Trigram. The querent is the ground-level wind, dependent on the environment; the early-stage startup, still a whisper of Xun Wind, is the Upper Trigram—the platform, the ecosystem the querent must inhabit.

Step 2 — Strip the text. Read the physical vectors (Imagery Layer).
Initial state: querent (Lower Xun) and nascent startup (Upper Xun) are both Wind. Two air currents, diffuse, penetrating, interpenetrating—a high-entropy, radically random suspension. But the future trajectory triggers a phase transition: the Upper Trigram’s startup snaps from intangible Xun Wind into Qian Heaven. Its mass surges. It becomes a force of absolute pressure, an unstoppable governing field.

Step 3 — Query the Oracle Archive for historical precedent (Empirical Case Memory).
This is the core engine of VibeIChing. You don’t ask the dictionary what the word means. You ask the Archive’s historical ledger: “How has this exact dynamic structure actually resolved before?”

When the system retrieves this specific kinetic signature, it surfaces a cluster of past records—bizarre on the surface, yet unified at the deepest logical level:

  • Record 1: 2025, a query about wealth. Outcome: “stable income.” (Absorbed into a stable system that dispenses a salary.)
  • Record 2: The Red Alert island battle above. Prism cluster killed by terrain. (In a standoff, the initially dominant Lower Trigram is ruthlessly sliced by a rigid, superior mechanism.)
  • Record 3: A dream divination. The querent dreams of picking up three stray dogs. A dominant mother figure (Qian) intervenes, forcibly disposes of two of them. The querent, in the dream, is powerless to resist—wailing. (Absolute power harvesting weak resources.)

See the pattern?

“Red Alert tanks,” “stray dogs,” “a steady paycheck”—three things as far apart as wind and cattle. In the lens of Hexagram Dynamics, they are solutions to the same physical equation.

They all describe one structure: a balanced standoff (Xun vs. Xun) in which the Upper Trigram suddenly undergoes a leopard’s transformation (Xun → Qian), surging into dominance. The Lower Trigram’s Xun is then either ruthlessly sliced (as in Red Alert, as with the stray dogs) or forced to lower itself, orbiting the new power’s rule-vortex, becoming a vassal sheltered under a vast dome (as with the stable salary).

Case Scenario Traditional AI Reading (Literal Line Statement) VibeIChing Hexagram Dynamics (Physical Phase Transition) Collapsed Reality
Red Alert Battle Your Prism army is the hunter, mowing down everything in sight. Massive kinetic energy (Xun) funnels into a narrow channel, slams into the map’s rigid rule (Qian). Kinetic energy → zero. Prey. Total annihilation (terrain kill)
Querent & Startup Deep partnership, mutual success, rich rewards for the querent. Querent (Xun) is drawn into the startup’s rigid governing system (Qian). The company sets the rules. The querent is absorbed. Vassal of the system (stable salary)
Stray Dog Dream The dreamer gains three adorable pets; life brims with joy. Weak resources (Xun) meet the absolute authority of a dominant mother (Qian). Resources are forcibly seized. The weak party cannot resist. Resources harvested by the dominant party

Step 4 — Only now does the line statement get to speak.
Look back at “In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken.” The startup has grown, hardened into Qian Heaven, radiating an immense gravitational pull. The querent enters its system the way an air current gets swept into the tail wake of a jumbo jet. The company is the hunter. The querent is the “three kinds of game” that are taken.

This is not a “pleasant partnership” fairy tale. It is a Heaven over Wind: Encounter carrying a whiff of danger—will this wind become a golden-collared executive riding the updraft to the stratosphere, or a boundary-crosser that the cold metal of Qian Heaven can crush at any moment? It depends on whether the querent can accurately read their own ecological niche.

But in every scenario, the querent is not the one doing the taking.

This is the gulf between AI hexagram interpretation and genuine insight into the Heavenly Dao. The most dangerous illusion is not outright nonsense. It is “the outcome might happen to be right, but the mechanism is completely wrong.” Once the mechanism is wrong, shift the time, shift the person, and the entire predictive framework collapses in an instant.

Epilogue: Step the Line Statement Down from the Altar—A New Paradigm for Divination

This is the paradigm VibeIChing is built to establish.

We do not need a bigger “line-statement search engine.” Feeding an AI more Wujing Zhengyi (Correct Interpretations of the Five Classics), more Mawangdui silk manuscripts, will not teach it the rules by which the universe operates. Text, by its nature, is a limited projection.

The hexagram is not the final answer. The hexagram first determines which roles exist in the scene, how they interact, and how force flows. The line statement is merely a “linguistic projection” of one narrow angle—a highly reductive, two-dimensional observation of a four-dimensional event.

We must reverse the order: Read the hexagram first. Then the dynamics. Then the cases. Only then let the line statement speak.
The hexagram is the skeleton. Dynamics are the flesh and blood. The line statement is the skin.
Text is dead. Vectors are alive. AI cannot parse the subject because it tries to pin a four-dimensional physical flow with two-dimensional literal meaning. In the coordinate system of VibeIChing’s Hexagram Dynamics, there is no absolute auspiciousness or inauspiciousness—only the misplacement of ecological niches.

In a future AI divination system, the line statement must step down from the altar of judge and be demoted to witness. What actually renders the verdict is the cold, rigorous inference of physical vectors, corroborated by countless real cases that have already collapsed into lived reality.

Only when AI puts on the spectacles of Hexagram Dynamics and Role Binding can we say it has truly opened its eyes—no longer a blind reciter memorizing the I Ching by rote.

And finally, picture this: You are Fu Jian, the emperor who boasted he could halt the river’s current with a single whip, your gaze sweeping the world with the contempt of a man who owns it. You stand before your nine-hundred-thousand-strong army at the banks of the Fei River.
Your AI advisor casts the final hexagram before the march: In the hunt, three kinds of game are taken!
It claps, cackles, and bows low: “My Lord, supremely auspicious! You shall take a fortune in spoils!”
Peace! ✌️ ;)
