Qingyun Philosophy in Practice 004 | Non-Self III: Cultivating Zero Ego in the Mandarin Grove, Releasing Self-Centered Benevolence, and Witnessing the Mother's Energy Cocoon as a Sacred Practice Space
Core Thesis: What this article is truly saying: genuine Non-Self means releasing the self-righteous benevolence we mistake for love. My mother’s toil in the tangerine orchard is not mere suffering—it is a spiritual practice of recharging and the Manifestation of a Vow, unfolding inside her own Energy Cocoon.
Question: Why do our elders refuse to listen, choosing hard labor over a peaceful retirement at home?
Answer: Because we, their children, define happiness through our own self-righteous benevolence. For them, that working land is not a burden. It is their Energy Cocoon, their practice ground—a place to shed the mundane world’s weight and repair themselves. Releasing judgment and simply staying beside them: that is Non-Self.
Is the Labor in the Tangerine Orchard Suffering, or the Manifestation of a Vow?

My mother is well into her years, yet she still makes the walk to the tangerine orchard every single day. Picking the fruit itself is not the hard part. The hardship is the sun on your back, the rain in your eyes, the bending of branches and the climbing to reach them.
Each tangerine is small, but a full day’s harvest adds up to over a hundred jin (roughly 50 kg). After picking, they must be hauled home, sorted, graded, and shipped to the producer-marketing cooperative. Add the scheduled rounds of pesticide spraying and fertilizing—each one a cost in time, energy, and body. It is a trade of body for money. My mother has quietly made that trade for decades, raising three children on the strength of her arms.
For years, my sisters and I have wished she’d just stay home. Watch television. Chat and spar with neighbors and friends. Live the easy life.
But she can never sit still.
The moment she’s free, she’s off to the orchard, as if something magnetic pulls her there and she never tires of it. It wasn’t until she left the workforce and came home that we noticed: we had always been seeing this through our own subjective lens.
Every tangerine tree in that orchard was planted and raised by her hands. Beyond the tangerines, there are a few lemon trees and guava trees, so the fruit we eat most is homegrown guava—zero pesticide residue, zero worry. Everything here has grown into being through her Manifestation of a Vow. This land is not merely a tangerine orchard. It is her Energy Cocoon.
What we see as grueling labor is, for her, a place to recharge within a field where she can pour herself in completely.
No need to read other people’s moods.
No need to worry about being disturbed.
No need to be tangled up in the mundane world’s worries.
With each snip of the shears, her conviction deepens. This is her practice ground.
| Our Subjective View | Her Real Experience (Non-Self Perspective) |
|---|---|
| A trade of body for money | An Energy Cocoon, far from the mundane world’s weight |
| She needs rescuing; she needs to retire and be cared for | A practice ground where conviction deepens with each snip |
| Sun and rain in the physical world | A place of spiritual recharging for the Manifestation of a Vow |
Because of this realization, I am willing to walk beside her every day and take on all the heavy lifting. And yet, friction between our different subjective worlds is inevitable. It took from this year’s Summer Solstice to Cold Dew—six months—for the hidden karmic threads to gradually converge into a perfect closed loop.
This is the true arc of practicing Non-Self.
