Glimpses of Light 004 | Samsara: A Visual Meditation on the Flow of Desire and Life's Endless Cycle

✍️ Yeats📅 發佈於:Thu Oct 01👁️ 0🔁 0[Art]

Question: In visual art, how can we intuitively grasp the relationship between Samsara and Desire?

Answer: Samsara uses light arcs fixed into wave shapes and their reflections on the water to form a closed loop with no beginning and no end. It shows how Desire freezes a fleeting moment into a repeatable landscape. Life, caught in this ceaselessly replicated rising and falling, becomes an infinite cycle in which every face is the other’s mirror.

Author’s Annotation: Infinite Cycles in Light Arcs and Reflections

Wave after wave of white light arcs rise from the foreground, stretch forward, and rise again. They are shaped like waves but halted at their peak—neither truly flowing like water nor fully concluded. Each arc is a repetition of the one before and a preview of the one after. This is the most direct image of Samsara: not a single rising and falling, but the same rising and falling, endlessly replicated.

The water mirrors the entire set of lights back. The upper half is light; the lower half is shadow. Nearly symmetrical, they close into a circle. Stare long enough, and it becomes impossible to tell which side is the “real event” and which is merely the reflection. Samsara is precisely this—action and result, this shore and the other shore, this life and the next—are often just two faces of the same coin, each giving rise to the other, each binding the other.

These lights are not natural waves. They are designed, illuminated, and fixed. We have turned “flux” into an installation to be watched, and so flux becomes landscape. Desire is plain to see here: the wish to witness flow, yet freezing that flow into a repeatable shape; the attempt to seize the instant of “rising,” yet sending that instant into an infinite loop. Where desire takes hold, Samsara takes form.

In the distance, dimmer lights wait—other waves not yet drawn into this main set of arcs. Samsara is never just the circle before your eyes; it always hints at the next circle, and the one beyond that. The darkness is vast, and light traces only a single path through it. So what this photo leaves isn’t energy—it’s quiet repetition.

The wave does not truly pass, nor does it truly arrive. It simply appears, reflects, and appears again—time and again in nearly identical posture. Arising, Abiding, Changing, and Ceasing is stretched here into a Closed Loop. Desire keeps it lit. The Dao, within this illuminated loop, is realized again and again.

Traditional View of Flow Author’s Imagery of Samsara
Linear Passage (Water flows downhill; the past vanishes) Closed Loop (Light arcs and reflections form symmetry; no beginning, no end)
Natural Arising and Ceasing (Waves rise and fall of their own accord) Desire Freezing (Fleeting moments fixed into repeatable landscapes)
Sequential Causality (Cause precedes effect) Real and Void, Mirrored (Action and result, this shore and the other shore, are two faces of the same coin, co-existent)
